FET Proactive nurtures emerging themes, seeking to establish a critical mass of European researchers in a number of promising exploratory research topics. This activity supports areas that are not yet ready for inclusion in industry research roadmaps, with the aim of building up and structuring new interdisciplinary research communities. The FET Proactive call in 'emerging themes and communities' includes four areas:
- Area 1: Future technologies for societal change
- Area 2: Biotech for better life
- Area 3: Disruptive information technologies
- Area 4: New technologies for energy and functional materials
